Artist's Statement

My father was an “illegal alien.”  I have lived and worked in several developing countries and with my family have experienced war and uncertainty.

This may explain my fascination with the American flag as an image for sculpture.  I have been creating flag sculptures along with drawings, prints, and other sculptural images, since the seventies.  Hopefully, my sculptures still can remind us of our roots,  our freedom, which we take for granted at our peril, and our creativity.

Whatever the image or medium, forming plastic, drawing with a stick of charcoal or with ink and a twig, the artist must be an agent of transformation.  How this transformation occurs is a mystery but it is fundamental to art-making.
